Lyon Libraries Makes Cents!

The Fernley Branch Library Makes Cents!

The Fernley Branch Library needs your help! The Lyon County Library System is launching a fundraising challenge to run from Labor Day 2011 to Memorial Day 2012. Our challenge is to raise 100,000,000 (one million) cents, or the equivalent of $10,000 in that time. The funds collected will go to the Lyon County Library System Gift Fund and will be used to directly supplement the cost of new library books and materials for all five Lyon library locations.

It has been no secret that over the past few years of economic downturn, the Lyon County Library System has experienced dramatic cutbacks to its budget. At the same time our branches are reaching record numbers for daily traffic and requests for service from our neighbors. We are now asking for a little help from our community in our mission to continue to offer superior Lyon County Library information and recreation services on a consistent basis. If every library patron donated just one penny each time they visited the Fernley Library we would race to the forefront of this mission!

The fun part of this challenge is that the Fernley Branch Library is in friendly competition with its sister-branches. The first branch to reach their individual goal of collecting $10,000 will receive a special allocation of funds to spend solely on their own branch! We will offer exciting opportunities for you to contribute to this fundraising challenge including free family movie nights, raffle prizes, read-a-thons, and other fun programming. If you’d like more information about this or other Fernley Branch Library programs and services please contact us at (775) 575-3366.

The Fernley Branch Library is located at 575 Silver Lace Blvd., Fernley, Nevada 89408. Telephone: (775) 575-3366. The Library is open Tuesday – Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Friday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Find us on Facebook.com

SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2011

We will be kicking off our annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the Fernley Branch Library at noon!  Come join us to eat pizza (free while it lasts), sign up for the program, get your goodie bag and check-out items to get you started toward your reading goal this summer.

This program is open to readers and listeners of all ages from Pre-K to adult.  The program is totally free, the only requirement is registration so that we may count you in our program statistics for future donations and financial support from our sponsors.

We will offer several passive craft programs for kids. Some pre-registration for workshops is required.

This year our goal is to get our adult readers participating in the program, as they traditionally are the ones who do not take advantage of this great program.  Help us meet our goal and take a moment to sign up starting June 11, 2011.

Readers who meet program benchmarks will qualify for raffle prizes and other goodies.

For more information please contact the Fernley Branch Library at (775) 575-3366 or visit us at 575 Silverlace Blvd., Fernley, NV  89408.

This program is made possible to our community thanks to donations from the Friends of the Fernley Branch Library and their local partners.

Opportunity is Just ONE CLICK AWAY @ the Fernley Branch Library!!

We are ecstatic to announce that the Fernley Branch Library has had 6 brand new public access computers installed!  These fast machines were made available to our community via the One Click Away... project grant funded by a federal stimulus monies for public computing centers, and is a partnership of the Nevada State Library and Archives (NSLA), Cooperative Libraries Automated Network (CLAN), Carson City Library, and Henderson District Public Libraries (HDPL).

By providing required matching (20%) funds CLAN received $191,115.00 of the project award of $808,000.00.  The monies purchased new public computers and peripherals for all CLAN public libraries! These much needed improvements to our public computer centers in CLAN libraries will ensure that the general public or specific vulnerable populations, such as low-income individuals, unemployed, seniors, children, minorities, and people with disabilities have access to broadband technology for personal enrichment and advancement.

We invite our community to come in and try out our new machines.  For years our library users have been relegated to utilizing slow and very out of date computer technology and subjected to very long waits for computer use -- those days are behind us!  With six well functioning brand new units you'll be able to achieve your goals.  Wait time has been further streamlined with the addition of new reservation software.

Let our staff know what you think of our new technology before you leave.  Your feedback is vital to ensuring that similar grant opportunities are available to us to help improve the quality of life for our residents and library users!

Call the Fernley Branch Library for more information.

Adapt @ Your Library - Androids Comes to LYF

http://www.philipkdick.com/works_novels_androids.html
After a successful inaugural program month in February, we are excited to kick off our second month of the Adaptation Festival at the Fernley Branch Library!  This month we are reading Philp K. Dick's, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?  This classic novel in the Science Fiction genre was adapted to the 1982 Ridley Scott Film, Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford.

Androids is set in the, now--not so far off, distant future year of 2021.  It features a text-book dystopian civilization that is constantly at odds between human and mechanical reality. Click here to visit the author's website for more information about the book.

We have copies available for those who wish to read this exciting novel.  Come join us on Friday, March 25 to  discuss what you thought of the story.  The book talk will be hosted at 2:30 p.m. at the Fernley Library.  Tuesday, March 29 at 2:30 p.m. join us at the library to watch Blade Runner, and stick around after to discuss what you thought about the film and the book it was adapted from.

We will be offering three more exciting adapted titles in future months for this program (see the list below).  Contact the Fernley Library for more information (775) 575-3366 or stop in to pick up your copy of the book today. We are located at 575 Silver Lace Blvd, Fernley, NV 89408 next door to City Hall.  This program has been made available to our community thanks in part to a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Nevada State Library and Archives (NSLA).

Upcoming Adaptation Festival Titles:
April:  The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
May:  Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote
