The Fernley Branch Library Makes Cents!

The Fernley Branch Library needs your help! The Lyon County Library System is launching a fundraising challenge to run from Labor Day 2011 to Memorial Day 2012. Our challenge is to raise 100,000,000 (one million) cents, or the equivalent of $10,000 in that time. The funds collected will go to the Lyon County Library System Gift Fund and will be used to directly supplement the cost of new library books and materials for all five Lyon library locations.

It has been no secret that over the past few years of economic downturn, the Lyon County Library System has experienced dramatic cutbacks to its budget. At the same time our branches are reaching record numbers for daily traffic and requests for service from our neighbors. We are now asking for a little help from our community in our mission to continue to offer superior Lyon County Library information and recreation services on a consistent basis. If every library patron donated just one penny each time they visited the Fernley Library we would race to the forefront of this mission!

The fun part of this challenge is that the Fernley Branch Library is in friendly competition with its sister-branches. The first branch to reach their individual goal of collecting $10,000 will receive a special allocation of funds to spend solely on their own branch! We will offer exciting opportunities for you to contribute to this fundraising challenge including free family movie nights, raffle prizes, read-a-thons, and other fun programming. September Trivia Question

El Dia de los Ninos ~ A Smashing Success!

Local Families turned out in fantastic numbers to help us celebrate El Dia de los Ninos at the Fernely Branch Library on Saturday, April 25, 2009. We would like to thank all who attended, as they were an integral part of the success of that event!

Children and adults enjoyed several different types of crafts including (the most popular) Talavera style painted piggy banks, free tamales, a live performance by the Aztec Multi-Cultural Dance Group of Yerington, and a pinata filled with goodies. Kids were invited to dance with the Aztec group after their performance and were given small trinkets for doing so.

We were happy to showcase our new arrivals for our Spanish and bilingual language collection inside the library which included new titles in adult and children's fiction and non-fiction and new additions to the Spanish/bilingual DVD and Audio Book collections! These items are available today at the Fernley Branch Library for check-out.

Celebrate Literacy @ Your Library! Bring the Family

The Fernley Branch Library is proud to announce the 2009 El Dia De Los Ninos celebration! This FREE Family Friendly Event will be held at the Fernley Branch Library on Saturday, April 25, 2009 from Noon to 3 p.m. (weather permitting) on our front lawn.

There will be a live dance performance by the Aztec Multi-cultural Dance Group of Yerington at 1:00 p.m., Free food, and craft stations for kids!

This program has been made available to our community thanks to the support of the Friends of the Fernley Library and a grant funded by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HONEST ABE!!

The Fernley Branch Library was excited to join in the bicentennial celebration for President Abraham Lincoln's birth during the month of February! Our 16th President would have been 200 years old on February 12, 2009. In his honor we have offered passive programs with a Lincoln theme for children in our community at the Fernley Branch Library.

Kids let their artistic talents fly and drew beautiful happy birthday posters for the Abe themed bulletin board at the Library. The Friends of the the Fernley Library provided really cool scratch sheets for this project.

Also supplied by the Friends of the Fernley Library were sculpting supplies with which children were encouraged to try their hand at sculpting a bust representing Mr. Lincoln. We ended up with several good Presidential busts and even a few freelance sculptures of different themes. The kids really enjoyed getting their hands dirty and letting their creative sides loose @ their Library!

The staff at the Fernley Branch Library would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of you who participated in our celebration!
