Looking for Book Bunco Squad Members!

We are very excited to announce a new, on-going, adult program at the Fernley Branch Library -- Book Bunco!

We are looking for 12 people who would like to join as monthly squad members and others who wish to serve as squad substitutes.

Bunco is a fast paced dice game similar to Yatzee.  Players win prizes and eat their way through candy and other goodies.  Bunco is a great way to make new friends and get some time out of the house or away from work for an hour or so.

Our first game is scheduled for Friday, February 25, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the Fernley Library Reading Room.  Subsequent games will be played the last Friday of each month at 3 p.m.

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)

We are very excited to announce that we will be hosting Write-In sessions at the Fernley Branch Library for anyone who is participating in the 2010 NaNoWriMo event.  The Write-In schedule is to be announced!

We will provide a comfortable inspiring environment for writers to work towards the NaNoWriMo goal of 50,000 words between November 1 & 30. Light snacks, coffe and tea will be provided by the Friends of the Fernley Library (FOL) free for writers during the Write-Ins.

Catching Up with Your Library

Hello everyone!

The Fernley Branch Library has been a little bit on the silent side of the blogsphere these days. We are busy as ever and I think it is time that we catch up a little. If you haven't been inside the branch for a while you're missing out on some pretty big aesthetic changes! We've been working hard at re-organizing our children's, Juvenile, and Young Adult collection areas. Our goal is to create spaces inside the branch that are welcoming and user-friendly for all patrons. Our young children's area has seen the most change; we've lowered the shelves to make things an easier reach for tots. We're adding some excitement to the walls by hanging some beautiful prints from our Picturing America grant collection.

We are celebrating 45 years of voter's rights with our display of the photograph of the march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965, photographed by James Karales. This image is also part of the Picturing America grant we received from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Check out their website (http://picturingamerica.neh.gov/) to see a selection of the rest of the available prints in this collection. They are perfect for a classroom setting or a home school opportunity! To celebrate the anniversary of the march to Montgomery, we are collecting short written works from all community members reflecting on their memories of the American Civil Rights movement. All pieces collected will be kept with the photograph as a "community memory" and made available for educational opportunities in conjunction with the print. The After School Craft Club is still going strong. Come to the Fernley Branch Library the last Tuesday of each month to participate in a free craft activity. For all ages, but especially appealing to the elementary to high school aged students.

We've got a lot more exciting events coming up at our library including the annual El Dia de los Ninos festival, and the Summer Reading Program. Check back for more information on these and other special events.

Ready for a "White Cow?"

The Fernley Branch Library is excited to announce a 50s Sock Hop for patrons of all ages!  We are celebrating the arrival of the children's book series, Hank Zipzer, by the "Fonz" himself, Henry Winkler!  The book series was donated to the Fernley Branch by the Friends of the Fernley Library, who are also sponsoring the Sock Hop.

MANGA CLUB ~ HOLIDAY PARTY 2009

The Manga Club, Anime Freekz 5, hosted a holiday themed party for young adults at the Fernley Branch Library on December 15, 2009.  They had pizza provided by the Friends of the Fernley Branch Library and got to get messy making handmade tree ornaments (in a Manga animation theme) and customizing our bookends for the library.  Check out our flickr.com photostream for pictures of all the fun we had! http://www.flickr.com/photos/fernleybranchlibrary.com

The Anime Freekz 5 meet weekly on Wednesdays at the Fernley Branch Libary from 3-4 p.m. The club is open for all teens who want to join.  Their focus is on Japanese Animation.  For more information drop in to one of their meetings or call the Fernley Branch Library at (775) 575-3366.
